Raku is an ancient Japanese ceramic artform where the bisque-fired piece is glazed and fired in a gas kiln to very high temperatures. It is then removed from the kiln with tongs and placed in a bin of combustible material such as hay or straw. Once smoked, it is removed and plunged into cold water.
