Handbuilt Ceramic Sculpture
This elegant elongated vessel embodies the elemental drama of fire and smoke. Hand-built in clay and pit-fired using traditional techniques, it captures the raw unpredictability and beauty of natural firing. The subtle curvature of the form — reminiscent of a canoe or leaf — invites quiet reflection, balancing sculptural presence with organic imperfection.
Each piece begins as a carefully formed clay slab, textured and refined while still soft. Once bisque-fired, it’s nestled into a bed of sawdust, seaweed, oxides, and organic materials within a brick-lined pit. As the fire burns and smoke envelops the surface, unique carbon markings and blushes of soft pink, grey, and black emerge — patterns that can never be replicated. The result is a surface alive with gentle depth and shadow, a direct dialogue between earth and flame.
The pale interior, with traces of subtle rose and smoke shading, contrasts beautifully with the darker outer tones, highlighting the vessel’s tactile, hand-formed character. It sits perfectly as a standalone centrepiece on a console or coffee table, or as part of a curated arrangement of natural and handmade objects.
Each firing yields only a few successful pieces; every one is truly unique — a one-off expression of process and chance.
