This hand-built raku bowl is a striking one-off decorative piece, created in buff raku clay and finished in a vivid crackled yellow glaze with bold intersecting black linework inspired by abstract modernist design. Measuring approximately 25cm in diameter and 6.5cm high, the bowl has a wide, shallow form that works beautifully as a sculptural centrepiece on a dining table, console, shelving or coffee table.
The bowl was individually hand-built rather than wheel-thrown, giving it a subtle asymmetry and tactile character that celebrates the wabi-sabi beauty of the handmade process. Fine crackling within the glaze, together with gentle smoke patination and surface variations created during firing, ensure that no two areas are ever quite the same.
After the initial kiln firing, the bowl was removed from the kiln while red hot and placed into a reduction chamber filled with combustible materials as part of the traditional raku firing process.
This dramatic thermal shock and reduction atmosphere create the distinctive crackle patterns, smoky markings and organic surface character that make raku ceramics so highly prized by collectors and interior stylists alike.
Although the bowl is food safe for displaying fruit, it is intended primarily as a decorative art piece rather than functional tableware. As with all raku ceramics, it is not watertight and should not be used for liquids.
A contemporary artisan ceramic that combines bold colour, graphic linework and the unpredictable beauty of raku firing, this unique bowl makes a distinctive statement piece for modern, rustic and curated interiors alike.
