Raku Firing: A Fiery Adventure Today!

Today’s raku firing was an absolute blast—from start to finish, every moment was charged with energy and creativity. Our kiln roared to life, reaching a full 1050°C in just 45 minutes, setting the stage for what turned out to be an unforgettable transformation.

The Heat of the Moment

As the kiln hit that critical temperature, we knew it was time to act. The pots, still glowing with intense heat, were carefully transferred into our reduction bin packed with straw and sawdust. This isn’t just any bin—it’s our secret ingredient for that unique raku magic. We tucked the lid on tightly (with a few wet towels draped over it to keep the smoke in check), letting the intense heat mingle with the organic materials for a full 10 minutes.

The Dramatic Dunk

The real showstopper, however, came next. With hearts pounding in anticipation, we pulled the pots out and, while they were still blazing hot, plunged them into a vat of cold water. Instantly, there was an eruption of spitting and steaming—a sizzling symphony that marks the very essence of raku firing.
